May Baskets-May 1st
- We are accepting orders for May Baskets
The tradition of delivering a May Basket on May 1st originally was a way of letting a romantic prospect know she was fancied. A suitor would hang the May Basket on the doorknob of the lucky girl, knocking on the door before bolting away. The lady then chased down the gentleman in an effort to steal a kiss. The tradition later included hanging May Baskets, arranged in pretty paper along with gifts and candies, on the doors of friends and neighbors as a way of welcoming the warmer weather with the flowers gathered at the end of April's showers.
Louisa May Alcott describes May Day in her children's book, Jack and Jill, it almost sounds like Christmas:
"Such a twanging of bells and rapping of knockers; such a scampering of feet in the dark; such droll collisions as boys came racing round corners, or girls ran into one another's arms as they crept up and down steps on the sly; such laughing, whistling, flying about of flowers and friendly feeling—it was almost a pity that May-day did not come oftener."
